A chance visit to the workshop from chef Aitor Zabala, who was visiting his hometown of Barcelona, became a fruitful relationship which, amongst other things, resulted in us making some of the most unique knives we have ever made for a restaurant.
Aitor is a native of our adopted city of Barcelona - his family immigrated from the basque country, but he grew up a Catalan. He has been living in the US for many years and does not come back to Barcelona often, but his parents and siblings are here and as luck would have it, he found himself in front of our shop and decided to come in. I have been following his work for years and even though I have not been fortunate enough to taste his creations yet, I'm always amazed by the technical ability and accuracy of his work, as well as the ingenuity and creativity.
Aitor asked us to create a small, surgical blade for the re-launch of his dream restaurant - Somni (dream in Catalan). We came up with this claw-like knife, with a very colourful patterned handle to resemble artist Okuda San Miguel's bull head statue, hanging in the dining room of the restaurant.
